Single- and dual-panel mode can be toggled with Ctrl+O (Cmd+O on macOS). - FEATURE: Added optional Preview panel at the right side of the main window. Preview panel can be toggled with Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on macOS). - FEATURE: Optional build-in terminal. It is so far in experimental stage and just very simple with a few limitations (no inputs from user to console when command is being run; no coloring of output). But its advantage is that iot starts faster and can have working directory sinchronized with the rest of HiFile. External terminal is of course still available. The build-in terminal can be switched off in Preferences (Preferences -> General -> Enable built-in terminal). - OTHER: Implemented several minor improvements and bug fixes. 0.9.15.9 (2026-02-28): - BUG FIX: Linux only: Fixed a problem which caused that when the dialog notifying the user that "ffmpegthumbnailer" app should to be installed to enable making video thumbnails, the value in the checkbox was not preserved sometimes. Also fixed a potential crash in the same dialog. - BUG FIX: Linux only: Fixed a problem which caused that programs started from HiFile appeared on the system Task Bar as children of the HiFile process instead of having their own icon. Probably affected only Plasma/KDE on Wayland. - BUG FIX: Fixed a problem that changing some custom key shortcuts were not allowed because they were blocked by some other "reserved" shortcuts. Now the list of reserved shortcuts was considerably shortened to avoid blocking user from choosing the shortcuts they desire. - BUG FIX: Fixed a problem with the filter in Customize shortcuts dialog. When this filter was cleared with the "cross" icon, then the cleared filter was not actually applied to the list of shortcuts. - BUG FIX: Fixed a recent regression bug which caused that scaling of the UI left the buttons representing the current folder unscaled or scaled incorrectly. - BUG FIX: When the user changed whether he wants to see or not see the total capacity of a drive by right-clicking on the drive capacity label, then this was not applied to the other panel. Fixed. 0.9.15.8 (2026-02-22): - BUG FIX: Fixed a recent regression bug that caused some keyboard shortcuts to stop working. They should work again now. Please report any remaining malfunctions. - BUG FIX: Fixed a recent regression bug which caused right-clicking on a file or folder in a list view or thumbnail view to not select the item. - BUG FIX: The state of the "Hide time for older dates" checkbox in Preferences was not stored correctly. This is now fixed. - BUG FIX: The state of the "Environment variables" edit box was not stored correctly in the Commands dialog. This is now fixed. - BUG FIX: Tabs and buttons representing the current folder flickered occasionally when the user changed the current folder. They should no longer flicker. - FEATURE: Added the option to display commands in the context menu. This can be set up in Commands -> Integration -> Context menu. Note that if a file type filter is set for the command, the command appears in the context menu only if it matches the filter. - FEATURE: Linux only: Added support for "foot" terminal. - NOTE: The next bigger version is already getting ready with LOTS of improvements and features. Stay tuned! :) 0.9.15.7 (2026-02-18): - BUG FIX: The minimum width of the navigation panel has been fixed. This was a recently introduced regression bug that caused the width of the navigation panel to grow significantly when a folder with a long name was present. - IMPROVEMENT: The default info-panel mode value in Preferences was changed. It was "ON by default," but was changed to "Remember for folders," a more convenient and less annoying option. - IMPROVEMENT: Windows only: The system context menu is also displayed after clicking buttons in the navigation panel. The logic follows what is set in Preferences > Context menu priority. The primary context menu is displayed after a right click, and the secondary menu is displayed after a Ctrl + right click. - IMPROVEMENT: A "Run again" button has been added to the command dialog output. The user can rerun the command directly from the dialog box without closing it. 0.9.15.6 Linux Only Version (2026-02-16): - BUGFIX: Fixed HiFile application desktop icon integration on some Linux distros. 0.9.15.5 (2026-02-15): - BUGFIX: Adding commands to toolbar by setting a toolbar icon was broken. This was fixed. - FEATURE: Linux: Added "Device manager" tool. It allows mounting and unmounting devices. These files are now opened as normal files, regardless of the executable flag. - IMPROVEMENT: Linux: Support for running commands with alacritty, kitty, xterm and wezterm has been implemented. - IMPROVEMENT: Double-clicking on a tab now offers editing of the current path, i.e. it is equivalent to selecting 'Change location' (or pressing Space). - IMPROVEMENT: The 'Close other tabs' action in the tab context menu will no longer close pinned tabs. - IMPROVEMENT: Multiple minor improvements and fixes. 0.9.15.3 (2026-01-25): - BUG FIX: Linux (Wayland) only. Fixed a crash that occurred when a message box appeared after a drag-and-drop operation asking whether to copy or move items. - BUG FIX: macOS only. Fixed an issue where multiple terminal windows were displayed when a command was run in Terminal. This has been fixed. The quick filter now takes the form of an editable box rather than a button. It also allows the use of wildcards * or ?. - IMPROVEMENT: The Chinese translation has been added. Many thanks and kudos to 王晨旭(Wang Chenxu), in online community also known as 大眼仔~旭, for his initiative and incredible professional contribution. Other non-English translations were done using AI (Gemini); please report any mistranslations. 0.9.15.0 (2026-01-18): - IMPORTANT CHANGE: Starting from 0.9.15.0 HiFile has become free to use on all platforms. License is not required any more and will be only optional if you choose to support the development. A small reminder panel may however be displayed at the bottom of the main window. Registering the license will remove it permanently. - BUGFIX: On Linux, the system icon theme name to be loaded at startup was translated if the language was selected other than English. This caused that the icon theme was not loaded correctly. Fixed. - FEATURE: A "Created" column has been added to show the creation date of the file. - FEATURE: The columns "Type," "Size," "Modified," "Created," and "Attributes" (or "Permissions" on Linux/macOS) can be switched on or off by right-clicking on the list view header. - IMPROVEMENT: All translations from English to Czech, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese were improved and completed using AI. Fixed. - BUGFIX: On Linux, the terminal sometimes did not start with the current folder set as the working directory. On some distros the terminal did not start at all. Fixed. Though there may still be some issues, some more improvements in this area will come in the next version(s). - FEATURE: Cloud drives, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud, and OneDrive, which manage the content of a specific folder on your system, are now identified as drives and listed in the Navigation Panel. This is a new feature, please report any malfunctions. - FEATURE: Actions in the main toolbar, as well as in panel toolbars, can be customized. Users can choose which actions are available/visible in the toolbar. In future versions, users will also be able to define the order of actions in the toolbar and later also custom icons. - IMPROVEMENT: By default, the exact time of day is hidden for dates older than two days (i.e., older than yesterday). Previously, the exact time was also displayed for older dates. This can be changed in Preferences > General > Hide time for older dates. - IMPROVEMENT: The loading of items in the Info panel and the quick search now work asynchronously. This should make the user interface work more smoothly. - IMPROVEMENT: On Windows, you can now set the context menu priority in the Introduction dialog (as well as in the Preferences dialog, which already existed previously). This setting determines which menu is primary and which is secondary when you right-click with or without the Ctrl key. - IMPROVEMENT: Drives on Windows are now refreshed using callbacks, which are more efficient and use fewer resources. For example, refreshing Google Drive information (e.g., available capacity) no longer requires recurring network traffic. This is now done only when necessary, e.g., when the drive is displayed in the information panel. - IMPROVEMENT: The Extract items (from archive) dialog now allows a user-defined subfolder name. Previously, the only option was to use a subfolder name equal to the archive name. - OTHER: Other improvements include many smaller bug fixes and optimizations. 0.9.13.1 (2025-12-05): - FEATURE: Automatic scrolling to the active tab. - FEATURE: Commands can now use %* (Windows) and $* (macOS and Linux) placeholders, which represent a space-separated list of selected paths. This allows users to pass multiple paths to the command. - BUG FIX: The displaying of column headers in the 'Find duplicates' window has been fixed. The 'time thermometer' can now be displayed there too. - BUG FIX: Fixed crash at startup when user cancels dialog asking for licence registration (displayed only when trial period has expired). - IMPROVEMENT: In the Navigation panel, group headers can now be collapsed or expanded by clicking on the entire item rather than just the icon. - OTHER: Some additional improvements have been made, including adding a few more actions to context menus and improving some widgets, as well as making a few minor bug fixes. 0.9.13.0 (2025-11-30): - IMPROVEMENT: Several significant optimizations were made to the Navigation panel as a follow-up to the optimizations made in version 0.9.12.3. The user interface should feel even snappier now. - IMPROVEMENT: When dragging items from a file list view, an icon representing the dragged items will appear on the mouse cursor. This is important especially on Wayland, where the mouse cursor does not change when dragging items. Now, it will be obvious that a drag operation is active. - IMPROVEMENT: On macOS, the key shortcut symbol in the menu and context menus is shown as the standard Return key symbol rather than the Enter key symbol. - IMPROVEMENT: On macOS, the context menu for App Bundles now has two separate actions: Run (key: Return/Enter) and Open (key: Right arrow). - IMPROVEMENT: On macOS, system folders named ".nofollow" are ignored, which makes searching the entire file system much faster. You can change this setting in Preferences > Advanced > Ignore .nofollow folders, but it is not recommended to change this option unless you really need to. - IMPROVEMENT: When an error message contains information about a path, the path becomes selectable and copyable using the mouse and context menu. - UPDATE: The Qt framework has been upgraded to Qt 6.10.1 on macOS (Apple Silicon version). - UPDATE: OpenSSL has been upgraded to version 3.5 on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel versions). 0.9.12.3 (2025-11-25): - IMPROVEMENT: The navigation panel was slow when loading data from slow drives, such as disks or network paths. This issue has been addressed by loading data asynchronously and implementing a few other optimizations to prevent the user interface from becoming unresponsive. - IMPROVEMENT: The navigation panel can now be completely removed by right-clicking on toolbars or tab bars and selecting "Customize toolbars and panels..." (or by going to Preferences > General > Toolbars and panels and switching "Navigation Panel" OFF). - IMPROVEMENT: Synchronizing large files could cause the UI to freeze (especially on Linux and macOS) because progress of the operation was reported too frequently. Fixed. - IMPROVEMENT: Experimentally added Wayland libraries for Linux. This should enable running HiFile on distributions without X11. Note that this is a big and potentially breaking change. Please report any issues related to this change. - UPDATE: The Qt framework has been upgraded to Qt 6.10.1 on Windows. - OTHER: A few more minor improvements and bug fixes. 0.9.12.2 (2025-10-24) - BUGFIX: Thumbnails of small image files (e.g. icons with low-resolution) were blurry. Fixed. - BUGFIX: Ctrl+Home (Windows and Linux) did not move the cursor to the start of the text in the Text Viewer. Fixed. - BUGFIX: Searching in text files did not recognize SVG files as valid text files. Fixed. - IMPROVEMENT: Tabs can now be optionally displayed at the bottom of the panels. Can be set in context menu "Customize toolbars and panels" after right-clicking in a toolbar or a free space in a panel. - IMPROVEMENT: Folders in the Navigation Panel can now be used as a drop target, i.e. the user can drag and drop items into them to start a copy or move operation. - IMPROVEMENT: Group items in Navigation Panel (Bookmarks, Drives, Recents) can now be expanded or collapsed with double-clicking. - IMPROVEMENT: The tab close button now only appears when the mouse hovers over the tab. This makes the UI cleaner and less cluttered. - IMPROVEMENT: The current folder is now taken into account when quick-searching for folders (after pressing Space). This makes easier to find a subfolder within the current folder. - IMPROVEMENT: The time thermometer can be switched on or off using the context menu (after right-clicking) in the item list header. This is simpler than toggling it in the Preferences. - UPDATE: The Qt framework has been upgraded to Qt 6.10.0 on Windows and macOS (arm64) and to Qt 6.9.3 on Linux. 0.9.12.1 (2025-08-14) - CHANGE: You can now pin tabs via the tab's context menu. Pinned tabs never change their current location (i.e. the current folder). If a location in a pinned tab is about to change, a new tab opens automatically while the pinned tab remains as is. - BUGFIX: (Windows) Fixed a regression error introduced in version 0.9.12.0 that caused opening files from network paths (in the format "\\server\folder") to fail. - IMPROVEMENT: The main toolbar can now be hidden again. This was not possible in version 0.9.12.0 because the right side of the main toolbar was needed as a container for minimized task progress bars. Now, these minimized tasks automatically find space for them in either the main or bottom toolbar area. - IMPROVEMENT: Splitter handles are now easier to use. They were confusing in version 0.9.12.0 after the navigation panel was introduced. - IMPROVEMENT: The navigation toolbar can be displayed instead of the default navigation panel, if desired. Also, the navigation panel contains the same recent locations as the navigation panel. 0.9.12.0 (2025-08-10) - CHANGE: A significant UI upgrade. A new navigation panel was introduced on the left side of the application window. Note that it can be hidden, and the previous navigation toolbar at the bottom can be enabled in Toolbar preferences. The look of the list view panels was also changed. - BUGFIX: (Windows) Local folders that were mapped as drives using the SUBST command appeared to be unavailable. Not anymore. Fixed. Note that drives mapped using the NET USE command worked fine, even if they were mapped to a folder on a local drive. - BUGFIX: (Windows) In the past, if a Windows shortcut (LNK file) contained a reference to an executable program with parameters, the parameters were ignored. Not anymore. Fixed. - BUGFIX: (Windows) Some operations, such as opening a file, failed for very long paths. Fixed. - BUGFIX: When copying or moving files to drives that don't naturally provide information about their capacity, such as iCloud or OneDrive, an invalid warning about insufficient capacity popped up. Fixed. - BUGFIX: When a user wanted to edit an existing bookmark, a dialog box would appear asking if he wanted to add a new bookmark. This was incorrect. Fixed. - IMPROVEMENT: Tabs now have closing buttons. These buttons are only shown if there is more than one tab in the panel. - IMPROVEMENT: (macOS) Item search and text search can now specify whether to search in app bundles or not. - UPDATE: 7-Zip archiver was updated to version 25.01. - UPDATE: OpenSSL was updated to version 3.5.2 on Windows. The previous version 3.0.16 caused false alarms of one of the malware scanners on VirusTotal.com which probably looked suspicious for users. Now we are back without the false alarms. - IMPROVEMENT: There are multiple minor improvements throughout the entire application. 0.9.11.2 (2025-07-20) - BUGFIX: Fixed the case when "Add bookmark" dialog gets shown even if the user has canceled the preceding message box asking if he/she really wanted to add a bookmark. - BUGFIX: Fixed pinch gesture handling in image viewer on machines (Windows and Linux; macOS worked fine). - IMPROVEMENT: As the result of the previous bugfix, unified mouse wheel behavior in image viewer. Shift+Wheel causes jumping to previous/next image, Wheel causes zooming. - IMPROVEMENT: File names in "Create new file" or folders in "Make folder" cannot contain invalid characters such as "?" or "*". A warning message will show up in such cases from now on. - IMPROVEMENT: (Linux) Mounted volumes can be unmounted using a context menu action "Unmount volume". - UPDATE: 7-Zip archiver was updated to version 25.0. - UPDATE: Upgraded to OpenSSL 3.0.16 on Windows and OpenSSL 3.5.1 on Linux. 0.9.11.1 (2025-07-09) - BUGFIX: (Linux and macOS) Fixed regression bug from version 0.9.11.0 which caused that drag and drop operation stopped working. - IMPROVEMENT: Several minor improvements in GUI. 0.9.11.0 (2025-07-05) - FEATURE: Enabled displaying of file type (i.e. file extension) column. This can be switched ON in Preferences -> General -> Display item type or by opening a context menu with right-click on file list view headers. They are now scaled while preserving their aspect ratios. - IMPROVEMENT: Merged the folder name conflict dialog and the file multi-conflict dialogs into one. Experimental - may yet be changed in the future. - IMPROVEMENT: When using a drag-drop of a path onto a panel together with Ctrl key down (Cmd on macOS), this results in new tab being added. - IMPROVEMENT: Several other minor improvements. 0.9.10.5 (2025-06-01) - FEATURE: Thumbnails are now displayed for video files on Linux systems if the FFMPEGTHUMBNAILER is installed. Displaying thumbnails for videos on Windows and macOS was already implemented in previous versions. - IMPROVEMENT: Display thumbnails for AVIF image files. On Linux, however, it requires the FFMPEGTHUMBNAILER to be installed. Note that some older and newer versions of Windows, Linux, and macOS may not support this feature. - UPGRADE: Updated the Qt version to Qt 6.9.1 on Windows, Linux, and the Apple Silicon version of macOS. The Intel version of macOS keeps the older Qt 6.7.3 version for compatibility reasons. 0.9.10.4 (2025-05-17) - BUGFIX: Fixed incorrect style of switched-on toggle buttons. It was not clearly visible whether they were switched on or off. - BUGFIX: Fixed incorrect zooming of some images when the image viewer appears for the first time. Also fixed preserving the size of the image viewer. - IMPROVEMENT: Implemented asynchronous loading of the list of recent files and folders during application startup. On an "average" testing machine, this resulted in startup times that were 400 ms faster. - IMPROVEMENT: When navigating to a hidden file or folder from a window other than the main one and hidden items are set to be invisible, the visibility of hidden items is automatically switched on. - IMPROVEMENT: Displaying of windows and dialogues has been improved so that they do not flicker when shown (this improvement is only observable on Windows; other platforms were fine). 0.9.10.3 (2025-05-04) - BUGFIX: Fixed an issue with running an associated program to view (F3) or edit (F4) a file on macOS. It is now also possible to add command line arguments to associated programs on Windows. - BUGFIX: Fixed a problem with system context menu on Windows which caused that some actions (e.g. "Open with") did not do anything. - BUGFIX: Fixed a folder reloading and refreshing issue which caused that some inactive panels at certain moment switched to a wrong folder and kept being refreshed, which was not necessary. - IMPROVEMENT: Improved tab scaling. Dragging a tab should also no longer cause jitter in some cases. - IMPROVEMENT: The information panel (Ctrl+I) has been optimized for faster display. However, users will probably only notice this if they are ninjas. Also the spacing between lines was reduced so that the information panels occupy less space. - IMPROVEMENT: Some panel-oriented actions, such as the view mode (thumbnails vs. list view; Shift+F3) and the information panel (Ctrl+I), are now located in the left corner of the panel footer. Consequently, the main toolbar is cleaner and more concise. - IMPROVEMENT: Customizing key shortcuts now offers a text search, making it easier to find a specific action. 0.9.10.2 (2025-05-01) - BUGFIX: Fixed display of permissions in list views which, after some changes in 0.9.10.1, also displayed octal permissions (e.g. 777) and there was not enough space for them. Now the octal representation is only shown in file information panels, but not in dense list views. - BUGFIX: Fixed working with drives mounted on /mnt/ under Linux. Hopefully. - BUGFIX: Fixed a regression bug since 0.9.10.1 which caused that visibility of the arrows, indicating that path buttons are scrollable to left or right, was not correctly updated. - IMPROVEMENT: Removed the horrible pink theme. If anyone was really using it (I'm guessing not), please mail info@hifile.app and we'll figure out a way to improve the theme and put it back. 0.9.10.1 (2025-04-30) - FEATURE: Panel tabs can now be reordered by dragging within the same tab bar and cloned by dragging to the other tab bar - BUGFIX: Fixed a possible crash after dragging and dropping a bookmark within the bookmark toolbar. - BUGFIX: Fixed missing or incorrect resizing of thumbnails in info panels. - BUGFIX: Fixed a bug where, when paths were passed to HiFile as command line parameters, they could only contain slashes '/' on Windows (previously, backslashes '\' did not work). The behavior of the '-r' or '--open-right' parameter, which previously opened the path in the left panel, has also been fixed. - BUGFIX: Fixed incorrect drawing of some path buttons when the button rounding was set to zero. - BUGFIX: Fixed a problem with drag and drop from HiFile to some programs (e.g. MS Teams) on Windows. - IMPROVEMENT: Ptyxis terminal can now be detected automatically during the first startup of HiFile on Fedora. - IMPROVEMENT: Permissions on Linux and macOS are now also shown as an octal number (e.g., 777). The permissions displayed in the Properties dialog are also updated when the user edits them in the Permissions tab. 0.9.10.0 (2025-04-21) - This is a special Easter update of HiFile containing four major new features long requested and awaited by many users. Please do not hesitate to report any problem or issue which you encounter so that it can be quickly fixed. - FEATURE: Introduced classical panel tabs. Tabs can be optionally switched off in "Preferences" -> "General" -> "Tabs mode". - FEATURE: Enabled scaling of main toolbar. This enables increasing the size of the main icons so that they are easily accessible. The default scaling is 150 percent. Users can change this by righ-clicking on the toolbar and selecting "Customize toolbars" -> "Main toolbar scaling". - FEATURE: Added a new button "Recent locations" (Alt+Down) to panel toolbar which shows the stack of locations recently visited in the panel. This corresponds to the locations which can be navigate to by "Go to previous location" and "Go to next location". - FEATURE: Added customization of file associations for the View and Edit actions. The user can now select which program can be used to view or edit files with specific extensions. To set this, go to "Preferences" -> "General" -> "File associations". - BUGFIX: On Linux and macOS, all drives incorrectly displayed the available size. Instead the size of the system drive was displayed. This was a regression error since 0.9.9.24. Fixed. - BUGFIX: Clearing the custom toolbar icon of a command by clicking the cross icon in "Command center" did not work, the cleared field was not preserved. Fixed. - IMPROVEMENT: Dark themes have slightly darker grid pattern which is displayed as the background of partially transparent images such as some SVGs or PNGs. Light themes keep the same grid as before. - IMPROVEMENT: Multiple minor visual improvements.
